Chapter Twelve

Garrett, Riley, and I are at the diner having lunch and trying to eavesdrop on everyone else’s conversations. This case is really stumping us. Without knowing for sure if the killer was after Declan Nash or Poppy Burton, it’s tough to come up with any sound theories.

“This is like an unending guessing game,” Riley says.

“Tawny was clearly upset about Declan’s death,” Garrett says. “She doesn’t seem to harbor any ill feelings toward Poppy, but the man she liked was interested in Poppy, so it stands to reason Tawny was at least a little jealous of the woman.”

“We also know that Dylan Burton inappropriately hit on Tawny, and Declan came to her defense. So her claim that being uncomfortable around Dylan is the reason she’s quitting does hold up.” I shake my head as I stare at my empty plate, my chicken salad wrap completely devoured out of frustration. “But if it’s not Tawny, who could it be?”

“Maybe you were right about Cooper Gaines being jealous of Declan,” Garrett says.

“But that implies Declan was the intended victim,” I say.

Garrett huffs. “The chief isn’t going to like this one bit. I can’t go back into the station with nothing.”

We have to be able to sort through this. “We know of one other person besides me who knows Poppy left the bakery early Friday night,” I say.

“Doesn’t that rule them out as a suspect?” Riley asks, slurping the last of her drink through her straw.

“Yeah, but if the killer showed up shortly after Poppy left, it’s possible they passed each other and didn’t even know it because Poppy wasn’t in her own vehicle.”

“I’m not following,” Riley says.

Garrett squints at me. “I think I might be. We need to go talk to the person who drove Poppy home on Friday because it’s possible they saw something. A car pulling into the back lot of the bakery or someone sitting in their vehicle nearby.”

“Right, and that person we’re looking for is Alexis Berry. She’s the woman who was with Poppy at the hibachi restaurant the other night,” I say. “I met her.”

“Great. I’ll get her address. Hopefully, she saw someone or something suspicious Friday night,” Garrett says, taking his phone out of his pocket and calling down to the station. “Officer Krugar, I need an address for Alexis Berry. Yeah, go ahead.” He sighs. “I’m on hold.”

I nod to him before finishing my iced tea. “Which officer is watching Poppy Burton?” I ask Garrett.

“Officer Casey.”

“Does she know she’s being watched?”

“Yes, but she doesn’t know the particulars as to why. Officer Casey told her that since the murder occurred at her place of business, we’ve decided to put an officer on guard for added safety.”

So she has no idea we think someone might have meant to kill her on Friday night.

Garrett raises a finger. “Yes,” he says into the phone. “I know it. Thanks.” He ends the call. “I’ve got the address.”

“Maybe we should go talk to Poppy first,” I say. I don’t like that she doesn’t know what’s really going on.
